There is almost always a work around to having fancy, specialized equipment. Generally, it's a more labor-intensive methodology, but in this case it was a piece of cake.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All I had to do to be able to put vinyl designs on hats using my standard shirt heat press (which has a flat platen) was buy a larger teflon sheet, some magnets and heat resistant tape! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using scrap batting I rolled up and covered with my old teflon sheet stuck it in the hat, I could hold the front of the hat with the design taped in place against the surface of the heat press (covered with the teflon sheet; magnets holding it in place). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are lots of tutorials on how to do this online. The one I watched said that you had to use flock vinyl to get it to stick... but the flock wouldn't cut/weed at the detail I needed, so I said F#$% it, and ran it off in regular vinyl. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It worked amazingly!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I would love to make myself more pants than I do. Unfortunately finding the right kind of fabric, thicker but with just enough stretch to it is nigh impossible. This Polka Dot Sateen provided a pretty good fit, not quite enough stretch for tighter jeggings, but enough stretch that I didn't even have to put a fastener in them.</div>

<br />
<br />
One of my new favorite projects (and products) are Lunch Utensil Sets,<br />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
which are ecofriendly and socially conscious. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm trying to make my workshop more minimum waste, and I make these re-usable, washable lunch entirely out of scraps from other projects or hand-me-down fabric, as well as leftover/scrap batting. I even make the binding our of bias tape I make from scrap fabric. The thread, unfortunately is new (but the only non-upcycled item).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The silverware I get from thrift stores; it is all secondhand, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
so also part of a minimum waste consumer model.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the whole purpose of the Lunch Utensil Sets is to provide a substitute for single use plasticware and napkins! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just keep it in your bag, car or office and enjoy food on the go </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
while cutting down on your plastic and paper waste!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Sometimes you just find a pattern that works perfectly, that's flattering but also <i>comfortable!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And when you do, you'd be a fool not to MAKE ALL THE THINGS!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I already posted about the first dress I made with the Dottie Angel Pattern <a href="https://graverobbergirl.blogspot.com/2018/07/dottie-angel-wrap-dress-simplicity-8186.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found the fit to be a bit loose/frumpy so I went down a size when I made my patchwork one. This required my piecing together a bunch of fabric leftovers my mother had given me. And then cutting the pieces for the dress out of those pieced sections of fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwnCQ11PQlvb_i62Vd1_DoR0S2ooxCsMfN6kCgl53eBXPUDxwHQRcvF3zhCFXxey1u78LRreJMxtSI1ICl3CSiEO6u-JSX3i0PPi5fxQrgubwfOeOxOdtYqBONQSoSB1IxYJ-Dsv3W63M/s1600/Patchwork+Wrap+Dress+Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwnCQ11PQlvb_i62Vd1_DoR0S2ooxCsMfN6kCgl53eBXPUDxwHQRcvF3zhCFXxey1u78LRreJMxtSI1ICl3CSiEO6u-JSX3i0PPi5fxQrgubwfOeOxOdtYqBONQSoSB1IxYJ-Dsv3W63M/s640/Patchwork+Wrap+Dress+Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The trouble with just dropping a pattern down a size, is that while it fits better in some places, it gets too small in others. So then I had to find some little fake camisole dickies to wear because the V in the neckline became much deeper. This could probably be allowed for, as with most patterns by using a full bust adjustment... But it wasn't critical here... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Anyway, I'm not sure why I needed cutesy Castiel fabric in my life, and why it needed to be Hawaiian-style, but apparently it was a mighty need, for me to spend hours drawing design elements, scanning them, cleaning them up, coloring them digitally and arranging them into a repeating pattern.<br />
<br />
I got learn something new, how to make seamless repeating patterns using GIMP (the best, free Illustrator alternative; because @#$ Adobe and their subscription BS!).<br />

I love to do fun local-themed t-shirt designs. Also, I'm a giant nerd. Wasn't sure if this one had been done before, but I just couldn't resist! The original design I made was with a porcupine (or 'bark eater') since Adirondack is a anglicized/bastardization of the Mohawk word for porcupine ('bark eater') and was what the Mohawk called the peoples who lived in the area. </div>

Bear was a custom request that I added into the variations I have on offer. They are another common animal representation for the park. I think this silhouette is more 'brown bear' than black bear (the latter is the species typical to the area), but the black bears have a less recognizable 'bear' silhouette.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my many awesome friends (awesome because they love to dress up and be 'silly' with me) ditched her husband and dog (read 'baby') to come spend Halloween with me. She had made this awesome Steampunk Tinkerbell costume over the summer, so I figured I should make a related costume, and settled on Captain Hook.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0c6lNdcWMarZHeDtidMpQLydpgPcYSIDvLuynwBNaUfTiztj0uVAW3uQOlrFAs_PEsb9SDfFHKaVcTOHe9g11Vk80mtY1Fxy9ZCyhUV0I2UfyjpG_1-ydfuc9HDKjMIbXjjoUxKns1M/s1600/Hook+Profile.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1320" data-original-width="1320" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT0c6lNdcWMarZHeDtidMpQLydpgPcYSIDvLuynwBNaUfTiztj0uVAW3uQOlrFAs_PEsb9SDfFHKaVcTOHe9g11Vk80mtY1Fxy9ZCyhUV0I2UfyjpG_1-ydfuc9HDKjMIbXjjoUxKns1M/s320/Hook+Profile.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Okay, primarily because I'd been itching to try out some Worbla (thermoplastic used by cosplayers for swords, body armor and the like)... And a Steampunk Hook seemed like a good project for it. Of course, I regretted this as it took much more time than I had anticipated (and didn't have) in the week leading up to Halloween Party! The plastic itself is pretty neat to work with, softens easily with a heat gun, adheres to itself and takes whatever shape you form it when soft. It cools to a hard, durable plastic. The priming, painting, sealing are extremely monotonous. I could've done better, but not bad for first (rushed) project and the result was passable. I put the hook piece on a dowel, rigged with wire that I could pull to raise the hook by moving my hand downward. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />I used <b>Butterick 6114 </b>for the Underdress and Jacket. I found that the underdress was way, way too long (what a waste of fabric) and had to take over 7 inches off. I even double-checked to make sure I had cut on the correct line, rather the longer variation, but I had! Usually I only have to take a few inches off, up to four or five for my not-tall stature. I also had to take the jacket in several inches in the waist. I liked the pattern overall, except for it makes one look puffy because the underdress is very voluminous and it's crammed into the jacket, lending one a decidedly frumpy look. I am about two inches smaller in the underbust/waist than this costume's end size. (Just something to be aware of if one wants a more fitted look.) Otherwise I like the style of it.<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I purchased the white cotton fabric for the underdress. It has an embroidered medallion motif that you can't really see in these photos. Otherwise, I completely 'shopped my stash' for the rest of the sewn components; red taffeta with black flock polka dots, gold lame, black french gimp (braid), assorted brass buttons, interfacing, underlining for dress, gold basket weave pleather for sword belt/sash, black pleather inserts/tops to make my Victorian boots look more pirate. I also already had my tricorner hat with feathers, goggles, gold stopwatch necklace, kraken necklace, brass bangles to complete the ensemble.</div>

So the t-shirt supplier I use sometimes sends freebies with orders. A couple orders ago, I got one of those cinch nylon backpack things. And it needed a classic Jurassic Park logo... because... it just did.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, perfect opportunity to test out specialty variety of heat transfer vinyl that works at lower temperatures. It's a little more labor intensive, as it takes prepping the nylon surface with rubbing alcohol and preheating between layers. But the design adhered and the bag didn't melt!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So this post is very, very late... I made this dress for my birthday party over a year ago. We did a fun 1920s themed murder mystery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The dress is a simple four piece design with a hem that comes to points, done in black satin. The designwork is dark gold and light gold spandex, actually (hard to get a good antique gold fabric). I cheater 'appliqued' it on by backing the pieces with heat-n-bond and then laying them out into the pattern, which is weaved in some places and otherwise meets up in points. There is a center front and center back seam as well as side seams that all required proper laying out of the pieces to align. The neckline is outside-faced with the gold fabric. The hem is trimmed with 12 inch gold fringe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If I had to do it again... I would (now having the capability) use vinyl and my heatpress... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Still would need meticulous laying out, but not so much ironing! And it might lay a little smoother than the thicker applique (with the layer of heat-n-bond holding it together).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've had these two fabrics (a red and white cotton damask, and a black and white check) for quite awhile and really always wanted to do a layered look with them, so when I came across this Dottie Angel Pattern (Simplicity 8186) it seemed perfect for them. Also, I didn't have a lot of either (about a couple yards of each, not even) and surprisingly this pattern doesn't require a whole lot fabric, as far as clothing goes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can sort of see in the pattern photos and 'views', the underdress is very much a sack dress. The little darts at the bustline are quite minimal in providing any sort of fit. So if you're curvy at all, you're looking at a horrendous outcome. I made it to a size to fit my bust, which meant the waist was literally 8 inches too large and the hip was a couple inches excessive as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did not take a photo of the original before fitting (it's really difficult for me to stop mid-project to take photos, even though I know that it would be helpful if I intend to blog about it). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyway, to mitigate the monstrosity of the sack dress, I first too the side seams in about an inch on each side, tapering from bust (where the dress fit was fine). Then I put in some classic front darts (from but through waist... making sure I didn't make them too deep or fully fitted, as this dress is a pull-on and has no fastener. I also threw a band of casing and elastic in the back to pull up some more of the slack while still allowing the dress to have enough give to be pulled on over bust.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Some shape is lost with this dress, as the wrap dress is only minimally fitted. I can't imagine having the true sack form of the underdress bunching up beneath it, however. Definitely needs fitting or modification unless you have a very straight line figure, like the model in the pattern photos. Then it looks great as is.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This was a commissioned piece by a friend for her husband. It's from his currently favorite game, Persona 5: Take Your Heart edition. (Got to love having nerdy friends with unique requests).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the piece in which I really realized that the vinyl shrinks when applied... Black outlines with a lot of detail are very hard to line up. And often require an entire new black layer to be cut (or a couple) until I can figure out the shrinkage percentage. It might actually be worth some experiments to figure out this ratio percentage so that I can automatically shrink any black outline/detail layers and not waste vinyl or frustration trying to make it work.</div>

Okay. So yeah, I'm a giant nerd. And maybe acquiring a heat press and cricut, and with them the ability to easily create t-shirts or etc, was not the best thing to normalize my crafting tastes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, this a memorable piece from a specific episode of <i>Supernatural </i>in which badass Dean finds himself reliving memories from his very early childhood, complete with 'I Wuv Hugz' t-shirt. </div>

(While the costuming in this series isn't particularly special, elaborate or stunning, the wardrobe department knows what they're doing, making character appropriate choices and creating subtle yet iconic looks with things as basic as a trench coat-wearing angel or a lovable curmudgeon with a signature dirty trucker's hat.)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
My friend's birthday was in May. And by 'friend' I mean someone who is basically my sister, that I've known since the age of 7 and attended school with (1st through 12th, not K-12 since she went to kindergarten elsewhere). Anyway, she very badly wanted one of our old school sweatshirts from the 1990s. So of course, being the wonderful friend I am ;-), I made her one </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
My friend is obsessed with Moana, so for her birthday, I did up a design based on some shirts I saw on the internet. (I cannot take credit for the design, neither will I sell them, since they are not my work). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqG_4IYE95EAVX4tt1_LfCrgzvN_-Y9lynBKKPwfMI3evjtJKLrUxd8KZ31lkbI9x2R4nOjbXg-uTR23nmAzT0zfmc_F58s8_DcIfUE1FgohgAlYT_47D91s7Mm0BhN1ZLD0TAvHy5Vqs/s1600/Hei+Hei+Boat+Snack+Flat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1385" data-original-width="1385" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqG_4IYE95EAVX4tt1_LfCrgzvN_-Y9lynBKKPwfMI3evjtJKLrUxd8KZ31lkbI9x2R4nOjbXg-uTR23nmAzT0zfmc_F58s8_DcIfUE1FgohgAlYT_47D91s7Mm0BhN1ZLD0TAvHy5Vqs/s320/Hei+Hei+Boat+Snack+Flat.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This design was six different colors. Hence, six different layers. Pretty tricky to line up. This is also about when I began to realize that the heat transfer vinyl shrinks a little when applied, so that subsequent layers don't quite line up. Not so problematic with this design, but extremely frustrating with a couple recent designs I've done (which have a thin and detailed black outline that overlays the color layers... lots of trial and error and adjusting and wasting vinyl.)</div>

This was a personal project. And the design is not even mine. I copied one I saw on website carrying mass produced items because it was perfect to go with these llama pajama bottoms my friend had given me for Christmas.</div>

Still, it was extremely challenging making the digital vector files from a random jpeg of a shirt on the internet. Also, the amount of layering of vinyl for this one was the most challenging up to this point. Each color is a separate layer, and also a separate vector (digital art layer/file).</div>

I decided to design a line of Casual Cosplay T-Shirts. And naturally, The Joker & Harley Quinn seemed a natural pairing.<br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;">The Joker Casual Cosplay T-Shirt</span></b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think The Joker would be the type of guy to appreciate a good tuxedo shirt. I think I may play with the design a little more to get something more in 'realistic' proportions. Except if I do, the fantastic overly pointed lapels will be lost. Another suggestion was to add the stripes from the pants... Opinions?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWxM3QkNZUDBqmD9cyz9qGlXNy2ZieIsBA5rgZyUrBf1ypB28gLba6DRXzYkuD4oaNfyU1j7kk1DMzJaVgmwcZ8_fjau9woTpvtY8OK-6wHospQ6HXcJ68Na4JqjEm4W_Wbv5v8vcKrPM/s1600/Joker+%2526+Quinn+Shirts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="798" data-original-width="1560" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWxM3QkNZUDBqmD9cyz9qGlXNy2ZieIsBA5rgZyUrBf1ypB28gLba6DRXzYkuD4oaNfyU1j7kk1DMzJaVgmwcZ8_fjau9woTpvtY8OK-6wHospQ6HXcJ68Na4JqjEm4W_Wbv5v8vcKrPM/s640/Joker+%2526+Quinn+Shirts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I couldn't decide which style top to Frankenstein (aka cut up and resew) into a Harley Quinn top, so I did both a cute tanktop from Next Level and a Vintage (heathered fabrics) Dolman sleeve top from Next Level. Because a red and a black top were required to cut up and sew together, I ended up with two mirror versions of each.</div>

I decided to do a more complicated diamond heat vinyl transfer with a deteriorated 'vintage' look to match the vintage style fabric (the nature of which doesn't translate well in these photos but looks really smart in real life). Picking out all the little bits has been the most complicated 'weeding' I've had to do so far.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The backs of the Dolman Sleeve Tops has the red, which is a little too bright to really match the 'vintage red' of the tops, but there really would be no HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) to match.</div>

Basically... Because I'm a giant nerd. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b><br /></b>
This took quite a bit of arranging and a number of applications with the heat press. A fun experiment in doing an allover print with a bunch of little vinyl transfers.<br />
<br />
...<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Bonus: Can you identify what I did wrong?</b><br />
<br />
<b>Hint:</b> Look at the Command/Yellow Insignia<br />
<br />
<b>Answer:</b> I forgot to reverse the image before I set it to cut. Because of the way vinyl transfers are cut and applied to the fabric, images must be reversed. Thankfully, it's a minor error for this design motif. Not like ending up with mirrored lettering :-pgraverobbergirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13863800265600683329noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6612366088668702020.post-62647725926791278952018-03-09T12:00:00.000-05:002018-03-18T23:41:32.104-04:00North Country Humor: Potsdam Toilet Garden T-Shirt<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I had done up this design when I first started my local t-shirt scheme, but had been discouraged by several people not to pursue its production for fear that people don't have a good sense of humor about the 'sensitive' subject.<br />
<br />
It's a long story and an inside joke for locals, but <a href="http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news05/local-artist-makes-home-grown-t-shirt-celebrating-potsdam-toilet-gardens-20180130&template=mwdt" target="_blank">this article</a> sort of covers the basis (and the fact that this shirt got so much attention speaks to its relevancy to regional/local issues).<br />
<br />
Anyway, the design was perfect to try out with my new Cricut, and test its detail abilities. It is rather difficult to weed this design, in particular the small lettering. But the result is worth it. I snapped a photo of the test shirt I'd done, posted it to facebook as I often like to show the projects I've made. It was shared by a fellow local artist and went 'North Country' viral. Many people were asking if/where they could get one, so I threw up a listing on etsy.<br />
<br />
I've sold just over a couple dozen, which for me is enough of having to produce the same thing over and over. I'm glad it was overall well-received and that there are people who have a sense of humor about the zoning dispute that has turned into quite a hot-button issue for the small town.<br />
<br />
More than anything, I like the idea (and so do others) that we can recognize, honor and even celebrate our local issues, whether we support one side of them or another.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The Technical Stuff</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is made from Thermoflex Heat Transfer Vinyl. I was skeptical of vinyl transfers before I started using the products. They actually are very soft and not at all as thick as I thought they'd be.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This design is three different requires and therefore requires three different transfer applications with the heat press. It's cold peel, so you have to let the transfer and shirt cool down between applying the different colors. I did have a bit of a bleeding problem with the pink onto the white with the original test one. But the Thermoflex brand had no bleeding issues. And by bleeding, it just looks like some of the pink edges are smudged where they touch the white if you look very closely at the design.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also was uncertain as to whether the cotton shirts would shrink upon washing and wrinkle around the vinyl. So I prewashed the shirts to prevent any such issue. I however did not think to prewash my original t-shirts, but they went through wash and dry without any puckering or wrinking, showing that the vinyl is not just durable but adaptable, having some give. </div>

Hawkeye is my favorite Marvel superhero... Both Clint Barton & Kate Bishop. So naturally the first vinyl transfers I had to experiment with were inspired by (David Aja's) Hawkeye comic art.</div>

I got a sample of every purple heat transfer vinyl I could find, but of course none were exactly the right shade to match the comic art. (It is more purple in real life than in the photo, but still... only as close as I could get to matching Clint Barton's Purple Target Shirt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Over the summer, I decided to get a small heat press to do t-shirt transfers and the like. I wanted to see if might be a viable vending endeavor to sell t-shirts with designs by local artists at various events/fairs. So I searched out a 'craft size' heat press from a brand I was familiar with using and I found to be a good quality. Of course, the internet mostly just provided scam webstores as sources for the little heat press I wanted. But the fact that photos of this product existed meant that it was a product made at one time. I did find a legit store through ebay located in the midwest, who were very friendly. But I had also sought out the manufacturer (straight to the source is sometimes best) and they put me in contact with their local rep (which was several hours away but I believe in going local in whatever ways you can). It turned out well, since they were holding a sort of business fair showing off different products, from screen printing to vinyl cutting to sublimation printing. And they gave me a discount for driving down and attending and purchasing my press there. (Bonus, I also got to meet my friend who lives downstate for some Indian buffet.)<br />

<br />
I love my heat press!<br />
<br />
I started off this new 'business' by purchasing transfers through Versatrans. You upload your original artwork and they print off the transfers (there are several medium choices they use) that can be applied to clothing with a heat press.<br />

<br />
However, the investment required to order the transfers isn't worth the reward:risk assessment. They are a bulk supplier in essence. And while you can order a minimum of 2 sheets, the cost of small orders is prohibitive to making any money off a shirt without charging $50. Therefore, bulk orders of designs have to be made.<br />
<br />
Come to the end of the year, and I had been seriously looking into getting a Cricut (a brand of computerized cutting machine). Surprise! My parents got me a Cricut Explorer Air 2 for Christmas. And I began to CUT ALL THE THINGS!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I did a few paper projects to begin with, but immediately ordered a Heat Transfer Vinyl sampler pack and the tools needed for making vinyl transfers (little picks and tweezers to 'weed' or remove the negative space on the vinyl transfers after they come off the Cricut).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWskFA2LQ14HWhgrv3yv2kVld6k5Q0x5jmgrXOR1iP_C9UtPXNAK-xtDiYyn_fzgPFFy-Mw_i20YkisWRfyAKh0BRX35jKKUdme9Pfmrs7CVQuhyxxtQxShNORgFNTUgWOE7neHIxK3xs/s1600/20180220_195445.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="961" data-original-width="1600" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWskFA2LQ14HWhgrv3yv2kVld6k5Q0x5jmgrXOR1iP_C9UtPXNAK-xtDiYyn_fzgPFFy-Mw_i20YkisWRfyAKh0BRX35jKKUdme9Pfmrs7CVQuhyxxtQxShNORgFNTUgWOE7neHIxK3xs/s320/20180220_195445.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
I love it! And while it obviously takes more time/work on my end than ordering the plastisol or versatranz transfers, it is more cost-effective and makes me happier not to have a bunch of inventory lying around. Which was also the point of having a travel-size heat press, to make shirts to order right on the spot at events.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned to see some of the projects this new craft obsession has born out... ;-)<br />
