DRESS-OF-THE-DAY 10: The Little Black Dress

In celebration of NATIONAL SEWING MONTH (here in the United States), I've decided to do an intensive blog series (well, intensive for me who obviously does not always make the time to blog), featuring a dress (or two, or a style) each day, not previously presented on this blog. Some will be my own creations, whether I used patterns or designed them myself. Others will be pieces I admire. Either will include an analysis and maybe some sources, history and tips. (At least, that's the goal.) I also have some guest bloggers scheduled (exciting!)

And now on to the Dress of the Day!

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

It is a staple of any woman's wardrobe... supposedly. And with good reason.
 It can be dressed up...

It can be dressed down...

It's never too loud for any crowd. It's classic and classy.

I get this. I really do.

But the thing is...

I have never had, do not have, and never will have a 'Little Black Dress'.

It's just not me. And not just because I'm not a 'night out on the town' or 'gala event' sort of gal. I've tried before when deciding on a dress project, looking at a pattern, telling myself that this would be great in some nice neutral tone... but once I'm in the store or perusing the internet for fabrics... forget about it. I am a ridiculous, bright color, vibrant, busy prints sort of person. And I probably always will be.

Sorry, LBD, I have all the respect in the world for you, but we're just not compatible.

It's not you. It's me.

  1. I too have never been a fan of the LBD, but I realized not too long ago that I do need at least one black (or dark) dress in my wardrobe. When I needed to attend a funeral and realized that my wardrobe had not only no black in it and my warm weather clothes are all colorful prints. So, I am going to be adding a single black (or at least dark) dress to my closet that can be worn any time of the year with the right accessories (heavy tights, scarf, etc. in winter), just in case. In a time of morning, you do not want to have to be going out and trying to purchase something. Just something to consider.

    1. Good advice, Brandy!

My 'funeral' wear... I hate to think of it as specifically for that, is sort of a black dress but still not really a 'Little Black Dress'. It is Calf-length with off-white polka dots and worn with a black '40s style blazer (lined with red-because I couldn't make it entirely without color, even if it's just secret color) with decorative welt pockets and white soutache detail.

  2. I have a LBD - in fact I'm wearing it right now with skull leggins underneath. I think it is rather flexible and I love it since it is made from thick jersey and very comfortable...
