DRESS-OF THE-DAY 3: The Nerd Chic Dress

In celebration of NATIONAL SEWING MONTH (here in the United States), I've decided to do an intensive blog series (well, intensive for me who obviously does not always make the time to blog), featuring a dress (or two, or a style) each day, not previously presented on this blog. Some will be my own creations, whether I used patterns or designed them myself. Others will be pieces I admire. Either will include an analysis and maybe some sources, history and tips. (At least, that's the goal.) I also have some guest bloggers scheduled (exciting!)

And now on to the Dress of the Day!
...

THE NERD CHIC DRESS

This is a style of clothing that I see more and more of, primarily due to the internet, and the fact that Geeks are free to be Geeks. (At least, more so than ever before). Also, I believe the revelation has finally occurred to the masses that Nerds and Geeks come in more forms than the standard pale, basement-dwelling, gaming, dungeons-and-dragons-playing cliche. Many people have a little bit of Geek in them, and with the popularity of franchises such as the Marvel blockbuster movies, the general population is finally realizing what exactly it is that the 'Geeks' have been obsessing over, fun creative, quality storytelling.

Girls are Geeks. But we are also still Girls. And many of us like cute dresses. So with the availability of promotional novelty fabrics, as well as the rare salvageable vintage nerdom bed sheet, we've been given the chance to be stylish yet fangirl-to-the-core, without resorting to the ubiquitous graphic tee or the ever-increasingly-risque cosplay outfits (which make Slave Leia look like a nun... but that's a discussion for another day).

So... Some Inspiring Nerd Chic Dresses...

Jurassic Park Dress

The full-skirted retro 50s style seems to be the most popular/conducive to the Nerd chic Dress, because it offers the large, unbroken plane of the skirt to display the fabric pattern/design/content.

Or some go subtler...

Modern Star Trek Dress

How To...?

Well, basically, grab one of your favorite dress patterns, acquire some nerd-tastic fabric in your favorite fandom, (marvel, star trek, star wars, doctor who, etc.) and sew! You will probably want to look for dress styles that best present your fabric's design. Smaller designs will look fine on dresses with smaller pieces, but you don't want to break up larger prints too much.

Do you have your Nerd Chic Dress? I admit I do.
